Halloween Favorite: Sweeney Todd

Will the Demon Barber Make You Sing or Croak?

Johnny Depp plays Sweeney Todd, a vengeful and deeply disturbed barber who comes back to his home to pay back all the evil he owes to those who have wronged him. Which is of course how he gets his well-earned title The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bohnam Carter) is pleased to assist Todd as he slits the throats of his customers in order to sweeten the pies that she makes. These two characters are just the kind of twisted souls that Depp and Carter excel in portraying.

Let’s face it, I’m a scary movie junkie. But don’t get the wrong idea. I’m not a big fan of buckets of blood, graphic violence, and a non–stop carnival of terror. In my book, subtle is always scarier. I prefer tingles going up my spine instead, with the occasional jolt of surprise to get some exercise. With that in mind, here are my favorite Hollywood Halloween haunts:

The Addams Family

"They're creepy and they're kooky,
Mysterious and spooky,
They're altogether ooky,
The Addams Family."

That twisted and backwards family is classic Halloween movie entertainment. When the Addams family lost Fester to the Bermuda Triangle they were heart broken. When Fester returns (played by Christopher Lloyd) their lives are full again and their twisted happiness is complete. But is it really Fester, or an impostor?

Tweens & Teens Movie Night Activity - Corpse Bride

“Isn’t the view beautiful? It takes my breathe away. Well, it would if I had any.”

Who would’ve thought that when Victor wanders into the woods to practice his wedding vows, he’d end up married to a corpse! He sure didn’t see that coming. The rest of the movie will be just as fun and surprising for you, your family and friends, especially when you put these great Movie Night Activities to good use. You’re sure to have a spook-tacular time! If you're still trying to decide if this movie is right for your group, check out the review here.

"Zoikes Scooby Like, It’s Actually A  Good Movie!!"

Fast-forward two years when Fred (Freddie Prinze Jr.), Daphne(Sarah Michelle Gellar), Velma(Linda Cardellini), Shaggy(Matthew Lillard), and Scooby are each individually invited to the newly popularized resort, Spooky Island. Strange things are going on and it’s up to Mystery Inc. to put their differences aside and solve the case, or else . . .

Eye Popping Fun

The creepy trio (Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton) are together in this Halloween favorite. Victor and Victoria are destined (by their greedy parents) to be married whether they like it or not. But just as soon as they decide that they like it, Victor accidentally marries himself to the lovely and decrepit Emily...the corpse bride. Will it be death that parts them or life that helps them see things selflessly.

Halloween Favorite- The Young Frankenstein

Hopefully you Vill enjoy Zis film

Frederick Frankenstein (“that’s Fronkensteen”), after years spent distancing himself from his family’s infamous past, inherits his Grandfather Victor’s castle in Transylvania. Upon his arrival in Transylvania he is met by his two assistants Igor and Inga (played by Marty Feldman and Teri Garr, respectively). Frederick eventually succumbs to his “destiny” and sets off to pick up where his Grandfather left off, reanimating a dead body; although he tries to make his creation a more sophisticated, intelligent supernatural being he discovers that he instead has planted an abnormal (“Abby someone?”) brain in the monster. This sets off the townsfolk (who already distrust the name Frankenstein) in to a frenzied mob, bent on destroying the ogre.

I remember wanting to see this so bad in '94 when it came out. I was literally writhing in my seat every time I saw a preview because I knew I wouldn't be able to see it since it was 'R' rated. 17 years later I finally hunkered down with the hubby to enjoy this long awaited story. I  have to say I've been imagining it better in my head all these years.

Halloween Favorite- The Others

Who Are They, And What Do They Want??

Nicole Kidman stars in one of my all-time favorite spooky movies, The Others.  Grace lives in an old mansion with her two young children while her husband is away at war.  The children are photosensitive and therefore must NEVER be exposed to direct sunlight.  This means that at all times, curtains are drawn and doors are shut and locked.  In a desperate measure of sanity, Grace hires an older couple to help with the cooking and cleaning so that she can keep constant supervision of the children.  But with the arrival of the new couple, things start going awry, doors open when no one has touched them, and secrets revealed that will shock and unravel the tightly wound Grace.  She alone must decide how far she’s willing to go to save herself and children from the world beyond the walls of the old mansion and The Others.
