(500) Days of Summer

Caution:

-"This plate is hot."

-Wet Paint

-"Ew, this stinks!"

These are all cautionary phrases we know and understand. However, most of us feel the need to investigate the accuracy of these statements ourselves which undoubtedly leads to our inevitable discomfort. At the beginning of (500) Days of Summer the narrator clearly states 'This is not a love story.' I was skeptical, as usual, and thought surely this was just some artsy move on the director's part to catch my attention. I felt the need to investigate the accuracy of the statement and as it turns out, the narrator was spot on with his cautionary quote...this is NOT a love story. It's a story about love.

Tom Hansen (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) believes in love 100% and waits patiently for it to come to him. When he meets Summer Finn (Zooey Deschanel) he is certain that his wait is over. He falls in love. She does not. This movie is for anyone who has ever been on either side of a breakup that was not mutually supported by both parties. I was all over the spectrum on this one. At some points I liked it and realized I was smiling to myself. At other points I hated it and was ready to go to bed early, until I made it to other scenes that had me nodding my head in enthusiastic agreement.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a cute kid but seeing him in an adult role was strange since I know him only as the kid from Third Rock from the Sun. Zooey Deschanel is adorable too, but her singing is much better than her acting. If you're in the right mood for this 'Sporadically Quirky' kind of movie I'd give it one and a half thumbs up.

Motherly Advice: With my filters at medium there is some swearing and suggestive dialogue neatly trimmed out. There's still some implied premarital sex but I'd say only mildly so-while you do see them laying in bed together they are both still fully clothed. With medium filters there is some alcohol consumption and a couple of bar scenes. With filtering I'd say this movie would be appropriate for teenagers 13 and up, especially if they are going through their first heart breaking break-up.
