Mom Pick- Enough

A Different Kind of Mother’s Day Movie!

I love all kinds of Mother’s Day movies, The Sound of Music, Step Mom, Cheaper By the Dozen, you know, the ones that give you the warm fuzzies. But I wanted to review a movie that is a feel-good “mom” movie in a very empowering “I am a mother, hear me roar” sort of way. A Mother’s Day Action/Thriller, if you will, that involves a mother who is relentless in her efforts to put the safety and security of her daughter first. So may I re-introduce to you, Enough…..
Slim (Jennifer Lopez) works at the local diner waitressing until one day her dream man walks in the door. His name is Mitch (Billy Campbell) and he’s rich, he’s handsome, he’s charming, and he wants her! Love blooms and the two set off and get married living the life of luxury. All seems like bliss to Slim until they have their first daughter, which seems to trigger a very dark and abusive side of Mitch. After a couple of years of enduring his abuse Slim decides that it’s her job as a mother to protect her only daughter and so they sneak off into the night hoping to never see or hear from Mitch again. Slim and her daughter undergo transformations making them unrecognizable…they thought. Sick of running , Slim decides that enough is enough and it’s time to fight back if only to protect her daughter, and if she must she’s ready to kill!

I watched Enough when it first came out back in 2002 and I have to admit that I had some pretty low expectations, but I was very pleasantly surprised when I was on the edge of my seat the entire film! I was a little unsure of Jennifer Lopez acting in such a high suspense action/thriller type of movie, but she pulls it off magnificently! You’ll get to see a side of her that is tough, but because it centers around her tender relationship with her daughter you’ll also feel all sorts of empathy towards her and her situation. The film also does a wonderful job in depicting a realistic domestic violence relationship. Because of this though you will see some rather disturbing scenes when Mitch is hitting and pushing Slim around, but this just gets you all steamed up for the grand finale in the end! That’s another thing that I loved, Enough didn’t just build tension through out the film only to fall flat in the end, it delivers a spectacular ending that will keep your adrenaline running high! Again, Enough isn’t the “fuzzy” type of Mother’s Day movie, but still the same it’s one that you will not want to miss out on this Mother’s Day weekend!

Motherly Advice: I had all of my filters set on medium and I was spared a couple of “f” words, a whole bunch of the usual cuss words and a handful of religious expletives. The biggest factor in this movie being a PG-13 rating is because of the domestic abuse that goes on between Mitch and Slim. Some of the scenes were cut short but I still saw some of the abuse and it was disturbing on an emotional level! I would recommend Enough for ages 15 and up and even then I would definitely have a candid discussion about domestic abuse before hand.

Trisha~ Big fan of movies where the chic gets to be all tough and fight back. Girl Power!!!
