Hmm. Did I hear about the Morgans? Oh, yes, about a decade ago, when the movie was called For Richer or Poorer. The plots of the two films are similar: an estranged couple see a murder and are put in the witness protection program where they are forced to be together and end up working on their relationship. In the 1997 version, the couple was Tim Allen and Kirstie Alley. This time, it’s Hugh Grant and Sara Jessica Parker as Paul and Meryl Morgan, New York professionals who are transported to rural Wyoming where they get in touch with middle-American values. U.S. Marshals (Sam Elliott, Mary Steenburgen) are the host family and keep the peace. Meanwhile, the hit man they can identify tries to track them down.
ClearPlay In Action!
Did You Hear About the Morgans? is pretty tame as PG-13 movies go. The ClearPlayed version cleans up 20 or so instances of language, some frank dialogue and implied scenes of intimacy between a married couple. Brushes with violence and an appearance by a bear could scare younger viewers.
Hear any good jokes lately?…
Not too many good ones, and no new ones in this movie. But despite its predictability, Did You Hear About the Morgans benefits from some good deadpan delivery by Grant, and it’s always nice to see Elliott and Steenburgen. If you don’t demand too much from your romantic comedies, Morgans is polite and familiar entertainment for most members of the family.
