Flight is not your typical Robert Zemeckis movie. For one, it has real people in it, whereas many of recent Zemeckis fare was filled with “synthespians” (Think A Christmas Carol, Beowulf, and The Polar Express). We think of Zemeckis as the director of Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Back to the Future, and Forrest Gump, fantasy–based special effects movie. While Flight has its share of special effects, it centers on a character study of Whip Whitaker (Denzel Washington), an alcoholic pilot who successfully crash–lands a passenger airline. He’s hailed as a hero until his substance abuse is discovered and he faces a possible lengthy prison sentence.
